They created the Devour Restaurant Week and a bar crawl-lite called the Sip and Shuffle as a way to boost the foundation’s name recognition in town. The King and Queen of Hearts campaign was developed to bring in new partnerships by having parents and other members of the community raise cash, Hill said, in hopes that the charity-minded community in Seal Beach, Rossmoor and Los Alamitos will start to see the foundation as a non-profit they can donate to even if they aren’t a parent. Superintendent Sherry Kropp called it “an education foundation that is really stepping up and doing good work.” The foundation raises money through summer enrichment programs and parent donations, offering scholarships and funding for additional teachers in Los Alamitos Unified School District schools. “The money we’ve raised is nothing compared to the awareness we’ve raised and the base we’ve built,” Hill said. The event netted more than $40,000 and brought about Seal Beach’s first restaurant week.īut what was more important to foundation board president Randy Hill was reaching a broader audience of potential donors than just parents – hence the gala. The occasion was the foundation’s first King and Queen of Hearts campaign, a six-week competition among seven residents of Seal Beach and Los Alamitos to see who could raise the most money for the school district. With the champagne and the black ties, the Los Alamitos Education Foundation’s latest fundraiser didn’t feel like a school event. ![]()
